Tony Piccuta Prepares for Trial in Motorcycle Accident Case Causing Serious Leg Injury

This week Tony Piccuta of Scottsdale Injury Lawyers prepared for trial in the case of Hambrook v. Lafitte. The case involves the firm’s client who suffered a grade 3B open tibia fibula fracture as the result of a motorcycle crash. The crash occurred in 2014, when the firms’ client was riding as a passenger on her boyfriend’s motorcycle. The boyfriend attempted to pass cars on the shoulder of the road and struck a vehicle that was turning into a business.

The motorcycle was traveling between 20-30 miles per hour at the time of the collision. The collision caused the boyfriend to lose control of his motorcycle and the firm’s client was thrown to the ground. A combat medic who was traveling nearby witnessed the collision and rendered emergency aid until the paramedics arrived. The client was air evacuated to a local trauma center where she received an emergency surgery that included a rod being placed in her tibia.

Over the course of the next several years, the client would require several surgeries due to the broken bone failing to fuse and because of a persistent bone infection (osteomyelitis) that developed. The client underwent nine surgeries and it was recommended that her leg be amputated by one of her treating surgeons. Eventually, the client went through an extensive course of surgeries that required the installation of an external fixation device that allowed her to save her leg.

Trial is set to begin on April 30, 2018. The defendant is represented by Hirshik, Gomes and Hummell—in-house counsel for Sentry Insurance. The trial should take two weeks and will be presented to a jury.
